Woman Power at Ladies Night Out

The vibe was like that of an International Soca Monarch final except that this was no competition. Ladies Night Out, staged on Valentine’s Night, February 14, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, was attended by what seemed to be more than 20,000 people, the majority of them women. It seemed as if women, on a night traditionally meant for couples and romance, had abandoned their male companions to attend.

Valentine’s Ladies Night Out draws ‘largest’ crowd

One of the largest crowds within recent times for a show of this kind attended the Ladies Night Out concert held on Friday evening at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Organised by Randy Glasgow Productions and billed as a Valentine’s treat for the ladies, the show featured the talents of Jamaican reggae crooner Jah Cure, R&B star Peabo Bryson and his singers and band, and soca stars Mr Kill@, Kees Dieffenthaller, Denyse ‘Saucy Wow’ Belfon, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons and the Vikings Asylum Band, a surprise appearance from Barbadian soca artiste Rupee and self-styled ‘Queen of Bakanal’ Destra Garcia.

12-year-old singer extends invitation to Prime Minister

Fast rising 12-year-old singer Avinash Maharaj once extended an open invitation to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to attend any event at which he was performing. The Penal resident and Naparima College student said he looked up to the Prime Minister as a hero and mentor. He is especially hoping that she will accept his invitation to perform at Ma Ki Pyar Hai: To Moms with Love, a Mothers’ Day series for two weekends in May. According to a release from promoter Randy Glasgow Productions, the event will pay heartfelt tribute to mothers, thanking them for everything they do, not only for their children, but for the nation as a whole. The concert will feature performances by singers, musicians, dancers and comedians, making for a complete all round production.

Baron Rocks at Concert

The National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port-of-Spain might have been built to accommodate 1,200 seated patrons, but all the 800-plus culture lovers attending Baron’s (Timothy Watkins) 40th anniversary concert on August 19, wanted to do was dance. As fate would have it they got music to do just that on the show presented by Randy Glasgow Productions (RGP) which featured superb music accompaniment by Pelham Goddard and The Band Roots for a first-class performance of Baron and “the pips”—the chorus duo comprising Marilyn Williams and Ramona Pompey. Johnny King and Scrunter (Irwin Reyes Johnson) were ideal guest performers on the programme, and added to the magical outpouring of music.
